Created in 2025 by the South Hams Ramblers, the South Hams Way is a remarkable long-distance trail showcasing the very best of South Devon. This 102 mile circular route links countryside, moorland, and coast, in one seamless journey, revealing the full beauty and character of this much-loved region.
Beginning and ending in the market town of Totnes, the trail explores four distinct landscapes. To the north lie the wide-open uplands of Dartmoor National Park, where the path climbs towards Avon Dam Reservoir and the highest point of the route at 1,281 feet. Here, walkers are rewarded with sweeping views across the moor before descending through wooded valleys and rolling farmland to the coast and the gentler landscapes of the South Devon National Landscape.
Along the coast, the trail follows fifty glorious miles of the South West Coast Path from Noss Mayo to Dartmouth, threading through sandy coves, craggy headlands, and lively seaside towns. Five of Devon’s most picturesque estuaries are visited – the Yealm, Erme, Avon, the Kingsbridge and Salcombe Estuary, and Dart. Each one distinct, ranging from tranquil wooded inlets to broad, tide-swept channels alive with seabirds and sailing boats. From Dartmouth, the trail follows the gentle Dart Valley back to Totnes, completing the circuit with a picturesque finale through riverside woodlands and charming villages.
Each stage of the walk offers a balance of natural beauty and cultural charm, with over a thousand years of history waiting to be discovered – from Norman castles and riverside mills to quaint village squares and delightful churches.
From the first step to the last, the South Hams Way is a joy to walk – a celebration of Devon at its most inviting!
