About Mickledore

Mickledore Travel is based in Keswick at the heart of the English Lake District. We are one of the leading specialists in self guided walking and cycling holidays in the UK, and provide a friendly, professional and flexible service.

We are walkers and cyclists ourselves, so it really matters to us that you have a good holiday. We are still a small business, with a lot of local knowledge, and personal enthusiasm for the outdoors. If you’ve got any queries, we’re always happy to help, so don’t hesitate to pick up the phone or drop us an email.

Mickledore began in 1997, and started by providing holidays in the Lakes for Dutch visitors. We’ve grown steadily since then, and now have customers from every corner of the world – and we’re very pleased that many of our customers return for more. (In 2011 we had our very first customer from 1997 book their second holiday!)

Our aim is simple – we want you to enjoy our countryside as much as we do, then come back and explore a new area next year!

Come and Visit us in Keswick

We have an office near the centre of Keswick where you can book your holiday in person – why not combine your booking with a short break in the Lake District?

Why Choose Mickledore?

We specialise in UK holidays, and by concentrating on what we consider the best routes, we get to know the trails, accommodation, and local area really well.

Accommodation is critical to your holiday and we make a special effort to find the hidden gems, as well as keeping a close eye on the quality of the more mainstream accommodation. Whether you are staying in a village inn, farmhouse B&B, country hotel, or local guesthouse, you can be sure it has been selected for its comfort, welcome, and character. We have former Keswick guest house owners on the staff – so we know the industry well.

  • We have over 20 years experience, and many returning clients.
  • We don’t cover every route – we choose what we consider to be the best and make sure we know them well.
  • Your money is safe – we are bonded through ABTA.
  • We care about the environment & support local charities.

Sustainable Tourism

Our holidays are centred on the great landscapes of Britain – so we think it’s important we help look after them, as well as doing our bit for the environment in general.

We’re longstanding members of Nurture Lakeland, a charity established to forge links between tourism and conservation in Cumbria. Nurture Lakeland promotes sustainable tourism with Cumbria and funds a whole variety of projects, such as Fix the Fells, which maintains and improves paths throughout the Lakes.

Many of us walk or cycle to work each day, and we’re doing our best to minimise energy consumption in the office. Our shredded paper is composted and our waste paper is recycled.

Sustainable tourism is also about supporting the local businesses, to help sustain the communities you’re visiting.  Nearly all our accommodation is small scale, and independently owned and run, meaning the profits stay in the local community, provide local employment, and help sustain the rural economy. We have many B&Bs on farms, where they help provide a diversified income which supports upland farming.

We plan our routes to be accessible by public transport wherever possible, and provide detailed information on getting there & back by bus & train. We recommend public transport as the most efficient and environmentally friendly method to get to and from your holiday.

Client Feedback

The whole trip was just fantastic, I have recommended it and you to so many people. All we had to think about was the walk each day and what we were going to see. The organisation of it all was faultless and left us to just enjoy it all.
