About Mickledore

Mickledore Travel is based in Keswick at the heart of the English Lake District. We are one of the leading specialists in self guided walking and cycling holidays in the UK, and provide a friendly, professional and flexible service.

We are walkers and cyclists ourselves, so it really matters to us that you have a good holiday. We are still a small business, with a lot of local knowledge, and personal enthusiasm for the outdoors. If you’ve got any queries, we’re always happy to help, so don’t hesitate to pick up the phone or drop us an email.

Mickledore began in 1997, and started by providing holidays in the Lakes for Dutch visitors. We’ve grown steadily since then, and now have customers from every corner of the world – and we’re very pleased that many of our customers return for more. (In 2011 we had our very first customer from 1997 book their second holiday!)

Our aim is simple – we want you to enjoy our countryside as much as we do, then come back and explore a new area next year!

Come and Visit us in Keswick

We have recently moved into new offices near the centre of Keswick, giving us much needed room to expand.  For the first time will have a shop front where you will be able to book you holiday in person – why not combine your booking with a short break in the Lake District?  As soon as the front office is up and running, we’ll give you more details.

Why Choose Mickledore?

We specialise in UK holidays, and by concentrating on what we consider the best routes, we get to know the trails, accommodation, and local area really well.

Accommodation is critical to your holiday and we make a special effort to find the hidden gems, as well as keeping a close eye on the quality of the more mainstream accommodation. Whether you are staying in a village inn, farmhouse B&B, country hotel, or local guesthouse, you can be sure it has been selected for its comfort, welcome, and character. We have three former Keswick guest house owners on the staff – so we know the industry well.

  • We have over 15 years experience, and many returning clients.
  • We don’t cover every route – we choose what we consider to be the best and make sure we know them well.
  • Your money is safe – we are bonded through ABTA.
  • We care about the environment & support local charities.

Sustainable Tourism

Our holidays are centred on the great landscapes of Britain – so we think it’s important we help look after them, as well as doing our bit for the environment in general.

We’re longstanding members of Nurture Lakeland, a charity established to forge links between tourism and conservation in Cumbria. Nurture Lakeland promotes sustainable tourism with Cumbria and funds a whole variety of projects, such as Fix the Fells, which maintains and improves paths throughout the Lakes.

All of us walk or cycle to work each day, and we’re doing our best to minimise energy consumption in the office. Our shredded paper’s composted and our waste paper is recycled.

Sustainable tourism is also about supporting the local businesses, to help sustain the communities you’re visiting.  Nearly all our accommodation is small scale, and independently owned and run, meaning the profits stay in the local community, provide local employment, and help sustain the rural economy. We have many B&Bs on farms, where they help provide a diversified income which supports upland farming.

We plan our routes to be accessible by public transport wherever possible, and provide detailed information on getting there & back by bus & train. We recommend public transport as the most efficient and environmentally friendly method to get to and from your holiday.

We had a “Brilliant” holiday. The weather was not in our favour, wind, rain, wind, hail, wind, snow, wind, get the picture? John and I were more than satisfied with all the arrangements. The B&B’s were all good, suitcases arrived and the packed lunches would feed an army! John will complete the “feed Back” form soon and sent it to you. Most of the B&B’s will get an A1*, they were all good but some of the owners went that extra mile to make us feel welcome. We did not want to single any of them out, But Christine at West View, Grasmere deserves to be. We arrived absolutely drenched a tired, her welcome was fantastic, within minutes our wet outer clothing was drying by radiators and we were sat by the fire drinking tea & eating homemade cake! We woke up next morning to the smell of baking bread, we thought we had gone to heaven. Both John and I would like to thank Mickledore, your B&B colleagues and Sherpa for your help in making our walking holiday a memorable and enjoyable experience. If asked we would have no hesitation in recommending any of you to friends. Thanks again

We had a splendid time with everything Mickledore arranged for us and I won’t stop recommending Mickledore to whomever hears me relate about my holiday. We found the website very pleasant and informative which was the reason we chose Mickledore in the first place. We were very happy with the trouble-free transport and luggage and the useful list of telephone numbers and the instructions provided.
