The Offa’s Dyke Path is one of Britain’s great long-distance walks, following the shifting border between Wales and England from the Severn Estuary at Chepstow to the North Wales coast at Prestatyn. Crossing eight counties and passing through three protected National Landscapes, the trail combines rich history, varied scenery, and a wonderful sense of journey from beginning to end.
At the heart of the route lies Offa’s Dyke itself, the vast earthwork constructed during the 8th century by Offa, King of Mercia. Built as both a frontier marker and a statement of power between Mercia and the Welsh kingdoms to the west, the Dyke still survives in remarkable stretches along the route, adding a real sense of history beneath your feet.
The landscapes change constantly as the trail heads north. In the south, wooded valleys and riverside paths through the Wye Valley give way to the open slopes of the Black Mountains and the magnificent Hatterall Ridge, the highest point on the path. Further north come the broad views of Hergest Ridge and the upland scenery around Knighton before gentler countryside beside the River Severn lead onwards to the canals, limestone hills, and castles of the Welsh Marches. The traverse of the Clwydian Hills provides a dramatic finale, with sweeping ridge walking and far-reaching views towards the Irish Sea.
Nature accompanies you throughout. Heather moorland, ancient woodland, and quiet farmland provide habitats for fox, red squirrels, buzzards, red kites, curlews, an array of butterflies, and much more. Wildflowers brighten the trail from spring through to late summer.
For all its grandeur and history, Offa’s Dyke Path retains a warm and welcoming character. Market towns, village inns, old churches, and hospitable communities punctuate the route throughout, creating a walk that feels as rewarding culturally as it does scenically. From the first glimpse of Tintern Abbey to the final descent into Prestatyn, this is a trail full of variety, atmosphere, and unforgettable border landscapes.
