Westmorland Way

From the Historic County Town to the Shores of Morecambe Bay

The scenic Westmorland Way is a 95 mile walk through the old county of that name, which now forms the south eastern segment of Cumbria.

The route starts in Appleby, the county town of Westmorland, the perfect starting point in the shadow of the Pennine Chain.  It then travels west and generally southwards, winding its way through some of the finest Lake District scenery, passing Ullswater, Grasmere and Windermere, before visting the market town of Kendal. Fom there it follows the canal and tracks through woodlands and meadows to Westmorland's only port, Arnside, on the shores of Morecambe Bay.

The Westmorland Way uses well defined paths and tracks which are well maintained over virtually its whole route. Please bear in mind the climb over Helvellyn range and Grisedale Tarn pass through relatively high and remote mountain terrain, where the paths are rougher and not waymarked. Therefore the ability to navigate is essential.

You may be lucky enough to encounter warm, dry weather over the whole route and enjoy dry paths with tremendous views, but you must be prepared because the weather can change very quickly.
