How Difficult?
This is a long trail with some remote and mountainous sections. It is however completed by thousands of ordinary people every year. A degree of walking fitness, the right equipment and common sense should get you there!
Most of the route is on well defined, not overly challenging paths - but not all of it! The walk passes over some of the high fells of the Lake District and over open, often remote moorland in the Dales and North York Moors. The route takes paths which are at times muddy, wet, rough, and steep - although not often all at the same time!
Bad weather can be encountered, even in the summer months, so the ability to navigate is essential. You may be lucky enough to encounter warm, dry weather over the whole route and enjoy dry paths and tremendous views but you must always be prepared because the weather can change quickly.
Coast to Coast
The Coast to Coast walk was dreamt up by Alfred Wainwright, the famous fell walker and guidebook writer, in 1973. Since then the path has become one of England's classic long distance walks. It covers 190 miles, from the sea cliffs of St Bees on the Irish Sea, to the fishing village of Robin Hood's Bay on the North Sea. The quality and variety of this walk was recognised in 2004, when it was rated the second best walk in the world, beating walks such as, the Inca Trail and Everest Base Camp walk.
As the route traverses the country, the two week journey passes through three National Parks and across a real cross-section of England's best landscapes. It begins in the Lake District, taking in deep sided valleys, lake shores and remote mountain passes.
Next is the limestone country of the Yorkshire Dales, famous for its intricate field patterns and dry stone walls. The old market town of Richmond marks the end of the Dales, before the path crosses the Vale of York and rises over the rolling moorland hills of the North York Moors.
Our Holidays
As well as the whole route, we offer the first and the second half as self-guided holidays. Both are well worth undertaking in their own right, or you can do half the route now and half later.
When choosing your route, please bear in mind that the actual distance walked on any day may sometimes vary by up to 2km/3 miles from the quoted distances (depending on the exact location of your accommodation). The mileages shown are typical door to door distances for each day.
The Whole Coast to Coast Path
St Bees to Robin Hood's Bay 190 miles / 304 km
We offer 6 holidays covering the whole route. The longer holiday is an arduous route march in 12 days which is only for the seriously fit. The 17 day trip is a much more leisurely paced experience. Most people spend 14 - 17 days walking the whole Coast to Coast Path. In choosing your option, please bear in mind that you are walking day after day for 2 weeks, so don't be over ambitious with your schedule.

Dales and Moors: Kirkby Stephen - Robin Hoods Bay
Kirkby Stephen to Robin Hood's Bay 109 miles / 174 km
The second half of the Coast to Coast, taking in the Yorkshire Dales, the North York Moors, finishing on the Yorkshire coast. From Kirkby Stephen at the head of the Vale of Eden, the route climbs into upper Swaledale, one of the longest and most remote areas of the Yorkshire Dales. It follows the dale along riverside paths and across moors over its entire length to the historic market town of Richmond. It then continues through the rugged heather clad of the North York Moors to the North Sea. A fine walk through Yorkshire's most distinctive countryside.
