Reivers - Hadrians                        Code:RH8
Tynemouth - Tynemouth in 7 days cycling

Reivers route and Hadrian's Wall Cycleway form a natural 350 mile round trip, from Tynemouth to St Bees and then back to Tynemouth. It is a route of great contrast, taking in Northumberland, northern Cumbria, the huge Kielder Forest Park and briefly crossing the Scottish border.

The route is generally well waymarked and the coastal sections at either end of the route are relatively flat, but there are a few steep, short hills in the central section. You will ride through some of England's most dramatic and wild countryside where you can "get away from it all" and enjoy the freedom of cycling in this unspoilt area.

This is our shortest Reivers and Hadrian's Wall cycling holiday covering the whole route in just 7 days! You will require a good level of fitness and a good touring bike, (we can arrange bike hire if required).

Route Description

Tynemouth - Bellingham
On leaving Tynemouth this morning you will use a network of cyclepaths to bypass the centre of Newcastle. After the old mining village of Wide Open the route passes through the Northumbrian countryside with views to the north of the Cheviot Hills. Today's destination is the market town of Bellingham.

Bellingham - Newcastleton
Today you cycle up the North Tyne Valley and on to Kielder Water, England's largest lake. You can cycle either side of the lake, both on and off road cycle routes are available today, to take you deeper in to Kielder forest. The route crosses the border into Scotland admidst Kielder forest before entering Liddesdale to reach tonight's stay in Newcastleton.

Newcastleton - Carlisle
On leaving this morning you cross back into England at Kershope bridge and carry on your journey down through the Solway Plain, through the market town of Longtown and on to the historic city of Carlisle.

Carlisle - St Bees
The final day begins on the Solway Plain before climbing into the northern fringes of the Lake District National Park. Small lanes skirt the fell sides and cross moorland before the route descends to Cockermouth and on to Workington. A network of cycle paths and a quite road take you on past Whitehaven (the official end point for Reivers) and onto the small town of St Bees.

St Bees - Bowness-on-Solway
Enjoying the views of the Lake District fells to the north. You will cycle through Whitehaven, Maryport, Allonby and onto where the route meets the Solway Coast, an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It then takes you through some fantastic coastal scenery to Bowness-on-Solway, at the mouth of the Solway Firth estuary.

Bowness-on-Solway - Haltwhistle
You then head inland towards the historic city of Carlisle with its castle and cathedral. Afterwhich you cycle alongside rivers and quiet country lanes, through woodland and past Lanercost Priory an interesting place, before arriving at Banks. Carrying on your ride past Birdoswald Roman Fort, Walltown Crags and Roman Army Museum, you will then descend into the town of Haltwhistle.

Haltwhistle - Tynemouth
Just after leaving Haltwhistle you will cycle past Twice Brewed where nearby is Vindolanda, an excavated Roman fort and museum, which is definitely worth a visit. Much of the old wall exists between Haltwhistle and Corbridge and it is certainly worth taking your time to look along some of the most spectacular sections of the wall.

The route then continues pleasantly through the picturesque and wild countryside of the Northumberland National Park which offers views of the North Pennines area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. You then follow the river Tyne onto Tynemouth and the end of this ride.
