Reivers - Hadrians                        Code:8RH10
Tynemouth - Tynemouth in 9 days cycling

Reivers route and Hadrian's Wall Cycleway form a natural 344 mile round trip, from Tynemouth to Whitehaven and then back to Tynemouth. It is a route of great contrast, taking in Northumberland, northern Cumbria, the huge Kielder Forest Park and briefly crossing the Scottish border.

The route is generally well waymarked and the coastal sections at either end of the route are relatively flat, but there are a few steep, short hills in the central section. You will ride through some of England's most dramatic and wild countryside where you can "get away from it all" and enjoy the freedom of cycling in this unspoilt area.

This is our shortest Reivers and Hadrian's Wall cycling holiday covering the whole route in just 9 days! You will require a good level of fitness and a good touring bike, (we can arrange bike hire if required).

Route Description

Tynemouth - Stamfordham
The route begins at Tynemouth and uses a network of cyclepaths to bypass the centre of Newcastle. After the old mining village of Wide Open the route passes through the Northumbrian countryside and on to Stamfordham, the first of your overnight stops.

Stamfordham - Kielder
On and off road versions are available on this route, either on forest tracks deep into Kielder forest, or on small forest roads up to delightful Liddesdale, lying just within Scotland.

Kielder - Westlinton
The route joins again at Newcastleton and uses country lanes onto Bewcastle, a most unusual hamlet, all exposed in a broad sweep of wild moorland.

Gradually the Bewcastle fells disappear and an easy descent on to the Solway Plain follows, through the market town of Longtown. Tonight's overnight stop is at Westlinton, just outside Longtown.

Westlinton - Hesket Newmarket
There are superb views over the broad river Eden, around Rockcliffe and Stainton before your arrival in to Cumbria's major city, Carlisle. From here you will climb into the northern fringes of the Lake District, for your stay at Hesket Newmarket.

Hesket Newmarket - Whitehaven
The final day begins on the Solway Plain before climbing into the northern fringes of the Lake District National Park. Small lanes skirt the fellsides and cross moorland before the route descends to Cockermouth and on to Workington. A network of cyclepaths take the route onto Whitehaven where the Reivers trip finishes.

Whitehaven - Silloth
Continuing your journey back up and along the coastline you will go through the old industrial coastal towns of Workington, Maryport and Allonby, where the route meets the Solway Coast. This is an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. You will then continue on to Silloth, which is today's destination.

Silloth - Carlisle
Today you will cycle through some fantastic coastal scenery to Bowness-on-Solway, at the mouth of the Solway Firth estuary. You then head inland towards the historic city of Carlisle with its castle and cathedral.

Carlisle - Hexham
Afterwhich you cycle alongside rivers and quiet country lanes, through woodland and past places of interest such as Lanercost Priory, Birdoswald Roman Fort, Walltown Crags and Roman Army Museum, before descending into Haltwhistle.

Just after leaving Haltwhistle you will cycle past Twice Brewed where nearby is Vindolanda, an excavated Roman fort and museum, which is definitely worth a visit. Much of the old wall exists between Haltwhistle and Corbridge and it is certainly worth taking your time to look along some of the most spectacular sections of the wall. Tonight's stop is in Hexham.

Hexham - Tynemouth
The route then continues pleasantly through the picturesque and wild countryside of the Northumberland National Park which offers views of the North Pennines area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. You then follow the river Tyne onto Tynemouth and the end of this ride.
