Tynemouth - Whitehaven in 4 days cycling

Of all our Reivers cycling holidays this is the middle length holiday, covering the whole route in 4 days. You will require a good level of fitness and a good touring bike, (we can arrange bike hire if required).

The Reivers cycle route is waymarked for over 170 miles, between Tynemouth on the North sea coast, to Whitehaven on the Irish sea. The route mainly runs along quiet country roads and traffic-free cyclepaths, but also follows many green lanes and forest trails through a variety of landscapes on it's way from coast to coast.

There are many variations on the route, including some challenging mountain biking or just roads and cycleways - you make the choice for yourself.

Route Description

Tynemouth - Bellingham
The route begins at Tynemouth and uses a network of cyclepaths to bypass the centre of Newcastle. After the old mining village of Wide Open the route passes through the Northumbrian countryside with views to the north of the Cheviot Hills. Today's destination is the market town of Bellingham.

Bellingham - Newcastleton
Today you cycle up the North Tyne Valley and on to Kielder Water, England's largest lake. You can cycle either side of the lake, both on and off road cycle routes are available today, to take you deeper in to Kielder forest. The route crosses the border into Scotland admidst Kielder forest before entering Liddesdale to reach tonight's stay in Newcastleton.

Newcastleton - Carlisle
On leaving this morning you cross back into England at Kershope bridge and carry on your journey down through the Solway Plain, through the market town of Longtown and on to the historic city of Carlisle.

Carlisle - Whitehaven
The final day begins on the Solway Plain before climbing into the northern fringes of the Lake District National Park. Small lanes skirt the fell sides and cross moorland before the route descends to Cockermouth and on to Workington. A network of cycle paths take you on to Whitehaven, your final destination.
